Tanzania - Gombe Streams National Park

Gombe Streams National Park in Tanzania, located at 4 40' S 29 38' E, is the smallest of that country's national parks and was formed in 1968 to give protection to the thousands of chimpanzees that live there, made famous by the primatologist Jane Goodall. The park forms a 2 km by 25 km strip of land near the shore of Lake Tanganyika. The actual lakeshore is excluded from the park, however, allowing visitors to camp or walk along the shore. The total area of the park is 52 km². Gombe Stream is an untamed place of lush forests and clear lake views. Hiking and swimming are also popular activities here, once the day’s expedition to see the chimpanzees is over. Guided walks are available that take visitors deep into the forest to observe and sit with the extraordinary primates for an entire morning -- an incredible experience and one that is the highlight of many a visitors trip to Africa. Aside from chimpanzee viewing, many other species of primates live in Gombe Stream’s tropical forests. Vervet and colobus monkeys, baboons, forest pigs and small antelope inhabit the dense forest, in addition to a wide variety of tropical birdlife.
